Jonathan Miller – The Ateism Tapes (2004)

The Atheism Tapes' is a series of one-on-one dialogs between Jonathan Miller and six acknowledged thinkers on the topic of belief and atheism. It follows 'Jonathan Miller's Brief History of Disbelief' which met with such critical acclaim and popularity that the BBC broke what was essentially an unspoken rule: Miller was allowed to create a second series from discussions cut from the first and air it within the same season. Each segment is dedicated to one discussion and is edited to a 30 minute duration.

Franklin J. Schaffner - Yes, Giorgio (1982) - Yes, Giorgio (1982)

You wouldn't necessarily expect a romantic comedy starring legendary tenor Luciano Pavarotti to be perfect, and Yes, Giorgio (1982) certainly isn't, but it's far from the flop that is its reputation. The decision to find a movie vehicle for the greatest tenor in the world at that time made perfect business sense, and producer Peter Fetterman thought he might have found suitable material in a story by fellow British author Anne Piper. The plot revolved around a famous opera singer who loses his voice during a U.S. tour and ends up falling in love with the female American doctor who cures him. Nothing too dramatic, nothing to unduly stretch the acting chops of an untried Pavarotti, who would need to rely on his charm and charisma to make the leap to the big screen from the opera stage. Fortunately, Pavarotti had plenty of both.

Georg K. Glaser is a worker and writer. Quite literally. He spends the morning at his desk, from midday on he can be found at his workshop in the Parisian quarter Marais. There he produces bowls, lamps, vases, jugs and other metal work. He is proficient in metalworking techniques hardly anyone else can perform these days. Born 1910 near Worms, Glaser ran away from home at an early age and went traveling; he was placed in reform institutions and joined the Communists. In 1933 he went underground and escaped via Saarland to France. There he became a naturalized citizen, worked for the national railroads, was conscripted in 1939 and soon found himself in German

Jean Rollin - La morte vivante aka The Living Dead Girl [Uncut] (1982)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Thought of by some as the last truly great film of Jean Rollin's career, the 1982 feature La Morte Vivante (The Living Dead Girl) is a fascinating but flawed feature graced with two of the most unforgettable performances in all of Rollin's canon. A frustrating work brought to life by some of the most iconic imagery seen in a Rollin film, The Living Dead Girl is a simultaneously ferocious and poetic work deserving of its reputation as one of Rollin's most important films...

Jan Bucquoy - La Vie sexuelle des Belges 1950-1978 AKA The Sexual Life of the Belgians (1994)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

In this sharp satire, famed Flemish provocateur and first-time director Jan Bucquoy pokes fun at Belgian provincialism by ruthlessly re-telling the autobiographical story of a clueless young bumpkin who tries to keep up with times but always manages to be a few frustrating steps behind -- something reflected by the decidedly dark and unglamorous settings in which he appears.

The room clerk, smiling, gives Henderson his key and says, ''Follow the path through the atrium, then take the scenic elevator to the 35th floor.''
It's another adventure for the impeccably tailored Henderson, an upper-middle-class Englishman for whom America is a coast-to-coast Disneyland. He makes his way through a man-made jungle of flora and chirping fauna to arrive at a boat landing. A smiling attendant greets him, draws up a canoe and directs him to paddle across to the elevator bank.

Gene Lasko - American Masters: W. Eugene Smith: Photography Made Difficult (1989)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

The American photographer W Eugene Smith (1918-78) is celebrated for his uniquely eloquent style of 'inside story' photojournalism, combining dramatic immediacy with compassionate engagement. This profile views Smith's 'heroic' achievements in relation to his complex personality. In the 1940s Smith was assigned by Life to cover the war in the Pacific, and his images from the US assault on Japanese resistance in the Saipan Mountains rank with the greatest war photographs. Smith's realization of the 'enemy as victim' and the message of universal human compassion shaped all his subsequent projects, and his vision is seen here as essentially religious, focusing on revelatory moments of pain, exhaustion, ordinary labour, anxiety and kindness. This film traces Smith's pursuit from the 1950s of an epic approach to photography, from the documentation of famine in Franco's Spain, to his coverage in 1971 of the Minamata mercury pollution incident in Japan, with which he felt his work had come full-circle.
