Pat Murphy - Nora (2000)

'In 1904, in Dublin, James Joyce chats up Nora Barnacle, a hotel maid recently come from Galway. She enchants him with her frank, direct and uninhibited manner, and before long, he's convinced her to come with him to Trieste, where he has a job with Berlitz. Over time, Nora pulls him through phobias, tolerates his drinking, takes in his brother Stan, and bests Joyce at 'the writin' game' to bring him back to Italy from Dublin where he's gone to open a cinema. But his sexual jealousy threatens the relationship and sends her back to Galway with the children. Is there any way to tame Jim's green-eyed monster? And, will the lad ever get his stories published?'

Early one morning Valerie has to tell her unemployed boyfriend Remi that she is pregnant. She has decided to keep the child, but they argue whether they should break up or not. That same morning Valerie starts working in room service at a smart hotel. The film follows the routine of Valerie bringing breakfast to the guests, Valerie constantly trying to phone her mother, and Valerie's relations with the other staff.

Pretty enjoyable film if I say so myself.

Yôji Yamada - Otoko wa tsurai yo: Torajiro kurenai no hana aka Tora-san 48: To the rescue (1995)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Released under the umbrella title of "Otoko wa tsurai yo" ("It's Tough Being a Man"), these films focused on Torajiro Kuruma (Tora-san), a rough-edged, irresponsible yet sincere, enterprising and basically decent fellow, who works as an itinerant peddler, returning periodically to his hometown, Shibamata in Tokyo's Katsushika Ward, and to the long-suffering family of which he is the black sheep.

Played with impeccable comic timing and a well-judged blend of tough and tender by Kiyoshi Atsumi, Tora-san brought pleasure to Japanese audiences for over a quarter of a century.

Audrius Stonys - Antigravitation (1995)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

this poem of inexorable yearning, people look out, up, away from their little spot in the universe. The snowy miniature tableaux of boxy houses, dray horses and children tugging sleds seem oddly comforting in contrast to the exposed heights of the town bridge, the church tower and the mountaintop. This quiet meditation lulls you, then sweeps you up into the heavens.

After we finished shooting “Earth of the blind” I was holding the impression of man climbing a big chimney for two years. How does the world look like from such empyrean? What holds man between earth and sky? How does the world look like from roofs of churches? These questions were the starting point.

David Attwood - The Fortunes and Misfortunes of Moll Flanders (1996)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

This energetic, sardonic, and richly funny adaptation of Daniel Defoe's classic novel is completely unlike what you might expect from genteel Masterpiece Theatre.

The heroine, Moll Flanders (Alex Kingston), after being born in prison, wends her way through the top and bottom of 18th-century English society, has five husbands (including a roguish highwayman who becomes the love of her life), many lovers (male and female), travels to America and back again, and in general discovers all that is cruel and sweet in life.

A director says, "Lights, Camera, Action!” and Hayan begins the sex scene with an actor. However, her underwear came into the camera, so a cinematographer calls, "Cut!" and all the staff are glancing her white underwear. Hayan, who was a star for a short time in porn films, left saying she would never take her clothes off for the camera again and will be casted for an art film. But the conditions on the set don’t meet with her expectations.

Orson Welles - Don Quijote de Orson Welles (1992)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

“Perhaps the most fascinating component of the films directed by Orson Welles was the masterpiece he never lived to complete. Beginning in 1957 and continuing on-and-off for the next 15 years, Welles self-financed and directed an audacious film version of Cervantes' "Don Quixote" which brought the legendary knight and his rotund aide Sancho Panza out of 16th century Andalusia and into the world of (then-) modern Spain. But despite his genius behind the camera, Welles was remarkably neglectful in maintaining and preserving the footage he created and much of his work was considered lost...and the footage that remained was not properly stored! However, throughout the 1980s and early 1990s the Spanish filmmakers Jess Franco (who served as Welles' second unit director on Chimes at Midnight) and Patxi Irigoyen tracked down nearly all of the surviving footage, finished the incomplete soundtrack based on Welles' notes, restored the footage where they could and offered a reconstructed Don Quixote de Orson Welles in 1992...” – Phil Hall, Filmthreat.com

Jim Groom - Revenge of Billy the Kid (1991)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

After an early career in post-production Jim Groom’s first feature-length directing stint was the low budget horror-comedy Revenge of Billy the Kid in 1992. This sick little tale about a half-man/half-goat creature going on a killing spree in the Westcountry became something of a cult hit on video, though it’s fair to say that it also repulsed a number of critics.

Leonard Schrader - Naked Tango (1991)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

"Naked Tango," the first film to be directed as well as written by Leonard Schrader, attempts to illustrate and make dramatic the gaudy background of the dance that came out of the multi-ethnic Buenos Aires underworld in the 1920's.

It's about the obsessive sadomasochistic love of Stephanie (Mathilda May), the pampered French wife of a much older Argentine judge (Fernando Rey), and Cholo (Vincent D'Onofrio), the handsome young gangster who makes her his dance slave.

Cholo, a pimp by profession, has no interest in sex. He just likes to dance, dance, dance. For him the tango is better than sex, and so private that he blindfolds the three-man combo that plays for him. Sometimes he even blindfolds his female partner.

David Heeley - Katharine Hepburn: All About Me (1993)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

We never saw this documentary when it came out. In a tribute to Katharine Hepburn, TCM showed it, as part of the daily festivity. Director David Heeley, who also co-wrote the material with Ms. Hepburn, clearly demonstrate an impeccable taste in what he carefully picked to show us.

Katharine Hepburn was a woman ahead of her times. She had a sense of self and her own style, something that came to her naturally. Ms. Hepburn was an actress who knew what seemed to suit her talent as we witness in all the movies she graced with her presence.

We are given clips from her films, as well as a tour of her Connecticut home and her surroundings. Also, in the documentary, we see some comments by her peers that speak volumes as to what extent she was admired by the people that came in contact with her. And, yes, she was opinionated, and didn't care to express her views, as she stuck by her principles.

Yes, it certainly was a privileged life.
