The 3 Worlds Of Gulliver (1960)
The 3 Worlds Of Gulliver (1960)
The Three Worlds of Gulliver is perhaps the least known of the Charles H. Schneer-Ray Harryhausen collaborations of the 1960s, perhaps because it was withdrawn from circulation so soon after its initial release. Kerwin Mathews, star of the Schneer-Harryhausen classic Seventh Voyage of Sinbad (1957), stars as Jonathan Swift's globetrotting adventurer Lemuel Gulliver. The first "world" is Lilliput, populated with teeny-tiny people who are about to go to war because they can't agree over which end of an egg to crack. Gulliver's second stop is Brobdignag, where our hero is surrounded by giants. The third world is England, where Gulliver is thrown into a lunatic asylum when he tries to relate his astonishing adventures. Jo Morrow plays the thoroughly dispensable love interest. The script, by director Jack Sher and Arthur Ross, manages to retain a great deal of Swift's trenchant satire without detracting from the film's "fun for all ages" entertainment value. As always, Harryhausen's Dynamation special effects are superb. A lilting, semihumorous musical score by Bernard Herrmann is the icing on this cinematic cake. -- Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Das indische Grabmal AKA The Indian Tomb 1 & II (1921)
Das indische Grabmal AKA The Indian Tomb 1 & II (1921)
The original Joe May-directed, Conrad Veidt-Starring, frumpy Mia May-containing, Fritz Lang/Harbou-written Das Indische Grabmal is an all-cylinders turning barrel of fun... full of exotic locales (or German- studio art-director's conception of exotic locales, which make them all the more unique), magic, intrigue, jealousy, spurned love, revenge... pure cinematic heaven. This film is pulp at its qualitative best, and the prints that David Shepard secured for this telecine are just wonderful, containing the original vibrant tints bursting forth from vintage nitrate prints.
Enjoy the fine mise en scene, the wonderully oily Conrad Veidt, the dashing Paul Richter (of Mabuse der Spieler fame), Lya dePutti, Olaf Fonss, a wonderfully sinister Bernhard Goetzke... I could go on. There's been no other release of this early 20's gem-- so... have fun!

Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N. (1951)
Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N. (1951)

It was based upon three of C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower novels, The Happy Return (Beat to Quarters in the United States), A Ship of the Line, and Flying Colours. Forester is credited with the adaptation; as a result, the film is faithful to his novels and features an occasionally introspective tone unusual for an old-fashioned swashbuckler.
"In the year Eighteen Hundred and Seven, a small ship of the Royal Navy set sail from England for a secret destination. With five million French and Spanish soldiers poised on the Continent under Napolean, nothing could save England from invasion except her 300 ships. HMS Lydia was soon far beyond battle-charged Europe. Under the most secret of sealed orders, she sailed for southern waters, fought her way around the Horn..."
Peck's Horatio blows that elfish, pouting girly-boy's (Ioan Gruffudd's) late 1990s version of the famous midshipman right out of the water. Spla-boom!
