It was the second time Delon had teamed up with René Clément:their first collaboration produced a great thriller "purple noon" .The second attempt produced a would be comedy which is not funny at all.The plot deals with fascists in charge of finding the antifascist printing houses.It's repetitive ,ponderous and boring.Barbara Lass was then Roman Polanski's wife and they came to France together at the turning of the decade.Lass's moment of glory was short-lived but Polanski would direct a segment in "les plus belles escroqueries du monde" a couple of years later.

Stylistically an intriguing (and not wholly successful) mixture of Rossellini's early 'realism', Bergman-period melodrama, and the contemplative didacticism of his later films, this return to the milieu of Nazi-occupied Rome may not have the raw power of Rome, Open City, but is immensely affecting all the same. Three escaped Allied PoWs - a Brit, an American and a Russian - take refuge in the home of Roman black marketeer Ralli, whose Communist lover (Salvatori) is executed when they are betrayed by a corrupt, Nazi-collaborator priest. On one level, it's a fairly straightforward suspense movie, detailing the countless threats to the safety of the fugitives and the woman who provides sanctuary; on another, it's an unsentimental, Paisà-like celebration of the shared humanity that allows the various characters to communicate with one another despite linguistic differences and the wariness born of perilous circumstance. An uneven, flawed, but very intelligent work of enormous humanity.

Alain Jessua - Paradis pour tous aka Paradise for All (1982)
Paradise for all: that's what a doctor gives to his patients. They have to undergo a special treatment, the "flash",and presto!gone are stress, blues and worries like that! So why did this marvelous scientist say so before?
A miserable insurances rep (Dewaere) tries to commit suicide: then he is cured by the doctor and he becomes "happy". Always smiling,always even-tempered,he tastes a brand new life, and is highly successful in his job. Little by little,we understand something is wrong with this "paradis pour tous". The other people cannot stand these happy people (Leotard's character). Under his smile, Dewaere hides a terrifying insensitivity. Quite legally, he "helps" his mother-in-law and his colleague to die "properly". These beaming zombies recall sometimes the "new" people in "invasion of the body snatchers".

Alain Jessua has made some of the most disturbing movies of a generally tame French cinema (mainly in the seventies and early eighties unless some "avant-garde" drivel like "themroc" counts). Barely ten movies in almost forty years.His best works are to be found between 1972 and 1982,his most fruitful decade which begins with "traitement de choc" and encompasses forgotten works such as "les chiens " "Armaguedon" and "paradis pour tous" . "Traitement de choc" is his towering achievement though:and not only because Delon and Girardot are completely naked for one sequence by the sea .There's much more substance to find here.The core of movie is the fear of dying ,and when you see so many people worship their body today, you cannot deny this flick was ahead of its time.,
In a strange clinic , doctors Delon and Duchaussoy make people look younger ,thanks to animal cells.That's what's they say.Their patients set up a small community of happy few .Girardot who has been ditched by her partner and who comes to think she begins to get old enters the place.Little by little,strange things happen:a lot of the staff (migrant workers) are sent back home because they've got the homesick blues.That's what's they say.One of her friend commits suicide because he was broke and could not afford this luxury anymore.That's what they say.The tension increases and in the last fifteen minutes ,"traitement de choc" becomes a true horror film.(One should note it was two years before "Solyent Green").
"Traitement de choc" is the selfishness of the bourgeoisie ,the power of money,the eternal dream of perpetual youth which haunts all of us ,man's exploitation of his fellow man (in every sense of the term)."Shock therapy" indeed.
