Elmer Gantry (1960)

Elmer Gantry (1960)

Elmer Gantry (Burt Lancaster), a drunken, dishonest street preacher allegedly patterned on Billy Sunday, wrangles a job with the travelling tent ministry conducted by Sister Sharon Falconer (Jean Simmons). Thanks to Gantry's enthusiastic hellfire-and-brimstone sermons, Sister Sharon's operation rises to fame and fortune, enough so that Sharon realizes her dream of building her own enormous tabernacle. These ambitions are put in jeopardy when a prostitute (Oscar-winning Shirley Jones), a former minister's daughter who'd been deflowered by Gantry years earlier, lures Gantry into a compromising situation and has photographs taken. It took several years for any Hollywood studio to take a chance with Sinclair Lewis' novel, and when it finally did arrive on the screen, producer/director Richard Brooks was compelled to downplay some of the more "sacrilegious" passages in the original. Also appearing in Elmer Gantry are Arthur Kennedy as an H.L. Mencken-style atheistic journalist, and Edward Andrews as George Babbitt, a character borrowed from another Sinclair Lewis novel. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Era notte a Roma AKA Blackout in Rome (1960)

Era notte a Roma AKA Blackout in Rome (1960)

Stylistically an intriguing (and not wholly successful) mixture of Rossellini's early 'realism', Bergman-period melodrama, and the contemplative didacticism of his later films, this return to the milieu of Nazi-occupied Rome may not have the raw power of Rome, Open City, but is immensely affecting all the same. Three escaped Allied PoWs - a Brit, an American and a Russian - take refuge in the home of Roman black marketeer Ralli, whose Communist lover (Salvatori) is executed when they are betrayed by a corrupt, Nazi-collaborator priest. On one level, it's a fairly straightforward suspense movie, detailing the countless threats to the safety of the fugitives and the woman who provides sanctuary; on another, it's an unsentimental, Paisà-like celebration of the shared humanity that allows the various characters to communicate with one another despite linguistic differences and the wariness born of perilous circumstance. An uneven, flawed, but very intelligent work of enormous humanity.

Home from the Hill (1960)

Home from the Hill (1960)

Robert Mitchum stars as Wade, the big-shot in town; he is rich, conceited, a good hunter, a phillanderer, and a bad husband and father. His wife (Eleanor Parker) has been holding a grudge against him since they were married. It seems Wade fathered a child, Rafe, (George Peppard) out of wedlock. Wade's legitimate son, Theron (George Hamilton), is bit of a wimp and a disappointment to old Dad. Add to this mix the young and pretty Libby (Luana Patton), who likes both Theron and Rafe, and the stereotypical Texas good 'ole boys who stir up the plot, and you have a great story.
Vincente Minnelli directs his material operatically, which is as it should be given the larger-than-life character and emotional entanglements he has to deal with. (Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide)

Jungfrukällan AKA The Virgin Spring [+Extras] (1960)

Jungfrukällan AKA The Virgin Spring (1960)

ALLMOVIE
Inspired by a medieval Swedish ballad, Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring (Jungfrukallan) begins with a scene of unspeakable brutality and ends with an image of uncommon beauty. 15-year-old Birgitta Peterson, on her way to church to light candles for the Virgin Mary, is raped and murdered by two older men. The men look for shelter at the home of Birgitta's father (Max Von Sydow), who murders the bestial killers in cold blood. When the deed is done, Von Sydow, a deeply religious man, begins to question the efficacy of a God that would allow his daughter's death, then permit so bloody a retribution. Then, a fresh, virgin spring bubbles from the ground where his daughter had been lying a few moments before. Taking this natural phenonenon as a sign from above, Von Sydow vows to erect a church on the spot where Birgitta met her doom. The winner of the "best foreign picture" Academy Award, The Virgin Spring currently exists in several versions of varying lengths; the longest, and most graphic, is the original Swedish cut. Believe it or not, this hauntingly beautiful film served as the basis of The Last House on the Left (1972).

Niewinni czarodzieje AKA Innocent Sorcerers (1960)

Niewinni czarodzieje AKA Innocent Sorcerers (1960)

A neglected masterpiece by Andrzej Wajda, reflective of the best of 1960s Polish cinema. Wry and cynical in tone, the work is important for being "the first film in Eastern Europe to chronicle the disillusionment of the younger generation" (San Francisco Chronicle). A bachelor doctor, who is also a jazz musician, can't quite commit himself to his superficial girlfriend. He and his aimless friends find any kind of human contact or emotional commitment a troubling and ultimately uninviting prospect. With Tadeusz Lomnicki, Zbigniew Cybulski, and a young Roman Polanski. Ocean's 11 (1960)

Ocean's 11 (1960)

'Ocean's 11':Sinatra Heads Flippant Team of Crime
A SURPRISINGLY nonchalant and flippant attitude toward crime-an attitude so amoral it roadblocks a lot of valid gags - is maintained through "Ocean's 11," which arrived at the Capitol yesterday. Frank Sinatra, who is the power behind the picture, should have a couple of his merit badges taken away.

The idea is that a bunch of fellows, Danny Ocean's (Mr. Sinatra's) breezy gang of wartime buddies and heroes, are assembled to do a little job of robbing five major casinos in Las Vegas on New Year's Eve. That's all. Ten cheerful, chummy fellows and Mr. Ocean, a stalwart crew, conspire - with Akim Tamiroff as their big boss - to pick up a bundle of dough.

And they do it, too. That's the sad thing. Almost as easy as rolling off a log (or rolling a sequence of "naturals" with loaded dice in a Hollywood film), these eleven guys knock out the power lines, "hit" the cashiers' cages in one fell swoop and rake some $5,000,000 into their convenient little black bags. They're so clever and humorous about it and the casino people are such dopes. Well, why not? Wasn't the crime team schooled together in a lot of Eighty-second Airborne Division "drops"?

That's the way it is: no dishonor, no moral misgivings, no sweat, outside of the normal, natural tension that occurs while the crime is being done. After the whole thing is over and a hijacker moves in to grab the swag, there is no built-in implication that the boys have done something wrong. There is just an ironic, unexpected and decidedly ghoulish twist whereby they are deprived of their pickings and what seems their just deserts.

This is the flaw in the picture-this and the incidental fact that a wholesale holdup of Las Vegas would not be so easy as it is made to look. For the substance is generally amusing - indeed, very funny in spots-the dialogue is cleverly written and the roles are deftly and colorfully played.

Mr. Sinatra is crushingly casual, Mr. Tamiroff is droll with vast despairs and Dean Martin is twitchy with wisecracks as a night-club performer who knows the world. Indeed, all the fellows crackle blithely - Peter Lawford, as a wealthy sybarite; Sammy Davis Jr., as a trash-truck jockey, and Richard Conte, as a cynical ex-con. Ilka Chase, Angie Dickinson and Patrice Wymore are equally cool as some of the girls. Cesar Romero does a smooth job as the hijacker who messes up the job.

Las Vegas looks flashy in color, as naturally it would, and there's plenty of atmospheric detail, such as gaming tables, girls and "one-arm bandits." Lewis Milestone's direction suits the movement of Harry Brown's and Charles Lederer's script, which is entirely centripetal, focusing exclusively on Mr. Sinatra and his gang.

Young people are likely to find this more appropriate and bewitching than do their elders. The latter are likely to feel less gleeful in the presence of heroes who rob and steal.
Bosely Crowther, NY Times, August 11, 1960

Atomic War Bride (1960)

Atomic War Bride (1960)

This Yugoslavian nuclear war movie is almost indescribable. It is madly satirical, almost comic at times, darkly bleak at others and all centered around the exploits of the groom, who somehow remains giddily optimistic in the face of the apocalypse.

The film's plot concerns a couple (John Johnson and Maria Maria ) whose wedding day is memorable for all the wrong reasons: their plans for the wedding are greatly inconvenienced by an impending war with an unnamed enemy that is about to grow into a nuclear one, the curch gets bombed, the bridegroom drafted, and is sentenced to death by firing-squad for sedition. Quite bizzare and with many unforgettable images, the film takes some surprisingly strong (for a production made behind the Iron Curtain) jabs at the ineptitude of government and military authorities.

Rat appeared to be the result of callobaration of the director Veljko Bulajic, in his homeland considered a creator of made to order epic blockbusters, and the Italian script writer Cesare Zavattini, famous for his works in great movies of Italian neorealism like De Sica's Umberto D. and Ladri di biciclette and others. The fact of such cooperation as well as international actor's crew involved may seem as unique as its result.

Never having been shown on official TV channels in its homeland since late 70's this film is now available only as a Something Weird's English-dubbed DVD-release.

Robinson et le Triporteur (1960)

Robinson et le Triporteur (1960)
Typical French movie of the late 1950's. I first saw this movie when it came out on TV, circa 1965. Seeing it again on DVD brought me back to memory lane.

Darry Cowl, like Fernandel, Bourvil and Louis De Funès has it's own style. The movie shows somebody madly in love that is ready to do anything to get his lady.

Comic situations that are not too funny, impossible situations and other idiotic scenario makes that movie not very good, but if like me, you liked Darry Cowl when you were a kid, it may be worth watching.

In 1941 Captain Jonathan Shepard takes over as Director of Operations at naval headquarters in London just as they receive reports that the Bismarck, the pride of the German navy, is going out to sea in the North Atlantic. Shepard argues in favor of moving as many ships as possible to the area to find her. In their first encounter with the Bismarck, the Royal Navy loses HMS Hood, the largest ship in the fleet while HMS Prince of Wales is severely damaged. Shepard then transfers ships from the Mediterranean fleet to go after Bismarck; they include the aircraft carrier Ark Royal on which his son Tom is serving as an aircraft gunner. Damaged in a second encounter, the Bismarck heads for Brest on the French coast and the safety of German coastal defenses and air cover. The only ship in range is the Ark Royal but in their first air sortie, they inadvertently attack HMS Sheffield when they mistake it for the Bismarck. In the second air sortie, they damage the Bismarck sufficiently to allow the surface fleet to catch up to her and sink her.
